The island lying just outside the Bay of Jakarta is known as The “Kepulauan Seribu”, or the Thousand Islands. Only short distance away, they are convenient to have for people escaping the daily hustle and bustle of the city. A Thousand Islands consist of 342 islands, including coral islets and sandbars, set in a clean blue sea strewn with corals. In the past years, many of those islands have been developed for tourism, and modern conveniences and sports facilities are now available.
The Thousand Islands are generally divided into two, namely the populated island and resort island.

Paradise Island (Khayangan Island)
Also called Cipir Island or Kuiper Island, is a place for fishing, diving and relaxing. There are remnants of old Dutch structures on the island and there is also a freshwater spring.
Bidadari (Nymph) island is located about nine sea miles from The Ancol Marina Bay and takes about 90 minutes to reach. It is only a few square kilometers large. The remnants of 17th-century Portuguese fort can still be seen. The island once functioned as quarantine center.
Onrust island lies close to the island Kelor and Bidadari. It takes only about one hour from Muara Angke Port or The Ancol Marina Bay, to set to the island. The name “Onrust” means “restlessness” in the Dutch language. The island is 1512 hectares large. It is said to have once been the most magnificent shipyard in Southeast Asia, a fact which was acknowledged by Captain James Cook, the skipper of ship Endeavor who stopped by in 1770.
Untungjawa and Kelapa island
Untungjawa island is inhabited by more than 1.000 people and Kelapa island 5.400 people, consisting mostly of fisherman. The island is approximately 137 hectares large. Until 1954, it was occupied by only a few families. However, since Ubi island could no longer support a population, the people there were forced to move to Untungjawa and other islands.
Is an oceanological science observation station. An important aspect of the studies undertaken at Pari Island concerns the conditions of the coral reefs and marine life in these waters. Nearby and very close to the shipping routes as well Pari island are Pulau Tidung (Tidung island) and Pulau Payung (Umbrella island).
Pulau Rambut (Hair island)
Are 45 hectares large, and is surrounded by coral reefs and mangrove strands. It can be reached from The Ancol Marina via the Bidadari island, Onrust, and Untungjawa. This island is also called Pulau Kerajaan Burung (The Bird Kingdom island) because it is a bird sanctuary where various birds species come to roost. From March until September, the number of birds increases from about 20,000 to around 50,000, as migrating birds from the Australian continent stop there to rest on their way to the Asian mainland.
Has been called the Pearl of the Thousand Islands, although it is only a few hectares large. It has been a popular holiday resort since the 1950’s and can be reached by speedboat in only 20 minutes from The Ancol Marina. Among the more illustrious visitors was the late President Soekarno, who occasionally took state guests such as President Tito of Yugoslavia and UN Secretary-General Uno to the island.
On this island, there is a spot diving where there is a ship “Tabularasa” which sank in the sea and interact with marine animals such as Sea Turtles. Pulau Pramuka is the administrative center of Thousand Islands District Administrative Region.
In the Thousand Islands, there is a National Park called Thousand Islands Marine National Park. This National Park is located on three islands of Panggang Island, Coconut Island, Hope Island with an area of 107,489 hectares (including marine waters) plus two islands of Penjaliran Timur Island and West Penjaliran Island with an area of 39.40 hectares. Sea Turtle Conservation and the habitat of the protected “Bondol” Eagle bird.

To get to the tourist attractions of the thousand islands, there are several departure points in Jakarta.
From Kaliadem Port in Muara Angke, West Jakarta
