Garut is about 60 kilometers away from Bandung. Because of its natural beauty that is similar to the Swiss state, Garut dubbed as Switzerland its Indonesia with the nickname Swiss Van Java. Garut is in the province of West Java.
Garut is also known for the results of breeding livestock Garut like sheep (Garut is known for the best quality of sheep in Indonesia) and Garut typical culinary foods namely “Dodol Garut”
It is widely known for its tobacco plantations and orange groves. Attractive recreation sites in the regency of Garut are Lake Bagendit (situ Bagendit), Cangkuang Temple, Sancang Forest, Talaga Bodas, Mount and Papandayan Crater, Darajat Pass, Santolo Beach.
Lake Bagendit (situ Bagendit) and Cangkuang Temple
Situ Bagendit is 17 kilometers from Garut, in Sukaratu village. There are bamboo rafts on which visitors can make a trip across the water while admiring the pleasant surrounding. The water of Lake Bagendit comes from the Ciojar and Cibuyutan rivers. The lake contains many kinds of fish.
Cangkuang Temple standing in the middle of Situ Bagendit. It is the first temple ever found in West Java and is believed to have been built in the 7th century A.D. The temple can be reached by crossing the water on bamboo rafts. Inside the temple is a statue of Lord Shiva.
To the east of Miramare plantation, 118 kilometers from Garut, is a part of the nature and wildlife reserve of Leuweung Sancang, where a number of timber species grow, some of which are found nowhere else. The western part of The Sancang Forest is called Cilauteureum, a beach recreation area.
In the Garut Regency is a 23,85 hectares recreation park in the hills. There is a hot-water spring inside in park area, and the view of the mountains are truly beautiful. The rainfall here averages 2.473 mm a year. From afar, Lake Bagendit, with is clear water, is visible.
Mount and Papandayan Crater
Mount with an altitude of 2665 meters above sea level is located about 70 km southeast of Bandung. It is one of the favorite natural tourist destinations in Garut because of its natural beauty of the mountains (Swiss Van Java). In this place, we can enjoy the scenery Papandayan crater and reach a place called Tegal Alun where edelweiss plants thrive. Take a picture on a cliff and enjoy the typical Papandayan sunrise.
Darajat Pass Garut
Darajat means a high place, the average height in this area is 1920 meters above sea level. In this region, there is a Geothermal Power Plant that supplies electrical energy needs in Java and Bali.
So it can be ascertained that the natural hot spring energy source is widely available in this area, so there are many hot water swimming pools which we can enjoy while viewing a beautiful landscape from altitude.
In Garut district, there is a beach named Beach Santolo. Located approximately 88 kilometers from the city of Garut, with a travel time of about 3.5 hours.
When you visit Garut, you will believe that it is not wrong if Garut gets the nickname Swiss Van Java.
